My Own Words

Hey! I’m Michael.

I spin in my office chair, ride shopping carts down the aisle, and tell lies for a living.

From making music, to publishing booksto filming weekly vlogs, the act of creating is an obsession that keeps me alive.

But who I am is not what I do. Who I am is how I do it.

3 things about me that might make you want to get to know me better. Or make you flee in horror!

Michael L. Martin Jr. was born in Baltimore, Maryland in the United States of America and presently lives in New York.

As a child, he discovered a love for creating and showed an early gift for drawing, songwriting and storytelling. At six years old, he became the runner up of his third grade Dramatic Reading competition.

His teacher informed his parents that his reading voice was excellent enough that he might have taken first place if only he had looked up away from the book and gazed into the audience at least once as he read "There's a Dragon in My Wagon". But he was too shy.

Opening a time capsule I made in my 5th grade class when I was 10 years old.

Writing took a back seat to music throughout Michael's school years. His first tools for recording his own music were blank cassette tapes, instrumentals and two boom-boxes that his mom—who worked two jobs at the time—had purchased for him.

After Michael graduated high school, he built up an extensive catalog of recordings and stage performances as an artist. He spent about fifteen of his formative years in the music industry developing varied skills such as writing, producing and audio engineering.

In 2013, Michael joined Carnival Cruise Line as an Entertainment Technician where he held many responsibilities like equipment maintenance and theater management. Primarily, he ran the sound board every night for Carnival’s top Broadway-style production shows.

His background in performing on stage in front of live audience came in handy when the Cruise Director asked him to play the main role in Hasbro's CLUE: The Murder Mystery show. Once a week for six months straight he performed in the main theater as the victim, Mr. Boddy.

The roster of clients Michael has worked with include Ashlee Simpson, JAY-Z, Nick Jonas and Tim McGraw.

In 2018, Michael was brought on as Technical Services Manager at the College of Performing Arts at The New School in NYC where he serves as main technical lead and head of audio. He supervises a team of student assistants and audio engineer employees, and facilitates technical support for concerts and events.

An idea for a novel came to Michael in 2001 but he didn’t believe he had the skills or the time to write a novel because he had put off writing while pursuing his career in music. He had never bothered to write a single word of that story as years flew by.

Yet, the story remained stuck in his subconscious. Seemingly, it wanted to be written. His Mom encouraged him to finally give it a try.

And within one month he completed a manuscript titled BURN IN HADES. It was published in late 2011 and Kindle Book Reviews voted it one of the Best Indie Books of 2012.

Soon after, Michael began coaching other writers to help them achieve their goals and generate self sustaining full-time incomes from their writing.

See, when Michael first started writing, he didn’t have a mentor. And he feels strongly that if he had had someone to guide him through the writing process, it would have made a tremendous difference in his life. He'd likely have grown much faster in his craft as it would have helped him avoid some of the mistakes and pitfalls that every writer faces.

Sometimes writers need a bit of help, structure and accountability to be successful. Therefore, Michael put together a system that he wished that he had had in his career.

Coaching writers eventually bloomed into Michael earning an income from ghostwriting fiction for authors who didn’t have time to sit down and write, and non-fiction for thought leaders and influencers and memoirs.

Michael’s biggest challenge was finding a way to help frustrated entrepreneurs who dreamed of getting their ideas out of their heads and into a book.

The thing was, as a ghostwriter, his job was only to write the book manuscript—no publishing, no marketing, no distribution, no book cover, nothing. You'd have to pay for all that separately, from different places.

Michael would kindly guide and consult these authors through the publishing process, yet every single one of them politely asked, "Can't you just do it for me?"

It wasn't that they were dumb, or lazy or weren't trying hard enough. They were very successful, intelligent and had done incredible things, all of which required a lot of hard work.

And Michael felt that it made the most sense that he solve their problem. So he did.

And in 2018, Michael created a simple, easy, and proven process that solves the three major problems that stop authors from publishing their book: time, expertise, and marketing. This new, innovative way of publishing came in the form of Bobbin Media.
